Guitarist/singer Walter Vinson and fiddler Lonnie Chatmon, collectively known as The Mississippi Sheiks, performed from 1930-35, and were even invited to a special command performance by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Their influence has traveled through time, and the duo receives another honor on the recordingThings About Comin’ My Way: A Tribute to the Music of The Mississippi Sheiks.

There are plenty of gems to soak up, including a stripped down North Mississippi Allstars performing "It’s Backfirin’ Now." Ndidi Onukwulu adds passion to the title track, and John Hammond steals the show with his acoustic blues rendering of "Stop and Listen." The Carolina Chocolate Drops return to the Sheiks’ traditional arrangements on "Sitting On Top of the World," Madeleine Peyroux steams up "Please Baby" with her sultry vocals, and Del Rey adds perky, upbeat tones to the charmer "We Both Are Feeling Good Right Now."

Playing various instruments, performing "Lonely One in this Town," and producing Things About Comin’ My Way is obviously a labor of love for Black Hen Music president Steve Dawson. And that is what makes this tribute worth the a listen alone. Mr. Dawson has gotten the best out of musicians who clearly wanted to add to the legacy of The Mississippi Sheiks. All have succeeded, and the album ensures the Sheiks’ music will reach into the next century.
